Recently a friend down at the house was perusing our back yard and I pointed out some Cedar tree starts that God, Himself planted for us. Our friend, Mike, commented that we needed to put deer resistant covering over them. Being the city slicker that I am, I asked "why?". ( Insert wide doe eye look here). He said...
"Because if the deer nip off the tops, the tree will divide and have two trunks or worse yet, die." ( Insert roll of his eyes here). I think that is what has to have happened to the above tree. I found the pix online.
So..... When I found this listing on Craigslist, I thought of you, well me first, but you as well. I hope you enjoy the info.
Deer Resistant Plants for Sale (South Hill)
I have taken the
liberty of copying it for all of us to reference. Sorry Scott, I would ask your permission if
you had left a number. Hopefully a
reader will come buy something and make it all worth your while. Please consider this an advertisement. Link to the listing.
People ask me all the time, "Scott, do you have any
plants that the deer don't eat?"
Truth be told, I don't think there is any such thing as a plant a deer won't eat. But there are plants that deer like less than other plants.
If deer are an issue for you and your garden, we do have many plants that are said to be deer resistant. Many of our customers report that these plants do seem to get ignored by deer, and having a yard full of these kinds of plants will usually cause the deer to go somewhere else to look for their salad bar.
So, what can you grow?
Ferns. All ferns tend to be deer resistant to some degree, but the Japanese painted ferns and deer ferns in particular are good ones for the deer-maligned.
That's it. I hope you like ferns.
No, I'm just kidding. There are other good choices besides just ferns! Had you worried there, though, didn't I? (I love his since of humor. B)
Below are some additional plants, all of which have strong deer resistance. The best ones say "Best Resistance" after their names.
Groundcovers
Ajuga, also known as Bugleweed -- Best Resistance
Arctostaphylos -- aka kinnickkinnick -- Best Resistance
Vinca minor -- sometimes referred to as periwinkle
Ornamental Grasses
Grasses in general are good choices for deer resistance.
Feather Reed Grass, such as Karl Foerster and Avalanche -- Best Resistance
Blue fescue -- Best Resistance
Carex, aka sedge -- Best Resistance
Porcupine grass -- Best Resistance
Perennials
Achillea -- Aka yarrow
Astilbe
Pinks, Carnations (Dianthus)

Creeping Thyme -- Best Resistance
Yucca -- Best Resistance
Shrubs
Abelia
Aucuba -- aka gold dust plant
Boxwood -- Best Resistance
Juniper -- Best Resistance
Potentilla -- Best Resistance
Spirea

This is just a partial list of what is resistant to deer and provide beautiful color too.
