Our Cape Cod Homestead

You may ask "What makes your homestead a Cape Cod?"  Well, let me tell you.... lol

Hallmarks of the Cape Cod Cottage

• Steep roof: side-gabled, single pitch

This picture also shows the window "shutters".

• Center chimney; ubiquitous in early examples  (Ours was removed when we re-roofed).

• Shingle-sided, and sometimes clapboarded on the front facade with shingles elsewhere (Ours was covered with vinyl siding).

• Un-Ornamented  except for the entry door, which might have a simple transom, fanlight, pilasters, or sidelights. Later examples had austere Greek Revival trim, as on lintels.

• Windows often go to the roof line in early examples, attesting to the low ceiling height 8'

This is a Cape Cod home sold by Sears in 1940.  Ours was built in 1945.

Although the floor plan is different, it has many of the same characteristics. We do have 5 rooms +1 and a bath.  In the Floor Plan section above it mentions the kitchen being out of sight, with the side entrance for convenience, and the cabinets grouped around the sink and a window above.

Behind the small room with 2 windows is the back door, or better yet, the side entrance for convenience as noted above.

Oh, that red, white, and blue again... sigh...

In the section starting with A hall, you could be describing our homestead home exactly, with the exception of the small third bedroom that was made out of the back half of the kitchen.  Ours has
windows on one side in each bedroom and still has amble closet space and plenty of wall space.

This is a Pic taken from the small bedroom with bedroom #2 to the left, DR to the right, bathroom on the left and straight ahead is bedroom #3.  This is a 12 ft hall too! Seems like miles long.

Alas, no basement to be found under our home.  What John did find was that the Osborne family did build it OVER the original septic tank.  Of course, this was rectified later and the new septic system was located BESIDE the house, where it should have been from the beginning.  I hope you have found that enough for tonight, lol so, ta ta for now, Beth
